Teaching Writing in the Age of AI

Welcome to The Science of Writing, a newsletter for anyone rethinking how we teach writing in a world transformed by AI.

I’m Daniel Stedman, founder of Brooklyn Magazine and Pressto. I started Pressto as a student journalism platform, grounded in the belief that when kids have something real to say and a reason to say it, they become stronger writers. After some folks from Newsela joined, we expanded the platform to support structured writing instruction across subjects and grade levels.

Now I’m focused on one big question: What does great writing instruction look like today?

This newsletter is where I share what I’m learning. It’s practical, research-based, sometimes personal, and always focused on helping students write with clarity, purpose, and voice.

If you’re a teacher, an instructional coach, or someone who simply cares about writing, I hope you’ll follow along.

“To Dad. From Graham. I hope you are doing good on Pressto.”
